Digitising a
250-year-old manufacturer

As we move into a digital world, it’s important to hold onto traditions, as they’re what customers love and cherish about brands. Nowadays, however, customers’ need for a visual representation of products on a website or in a catalogue is greater than ever.

What’s more, customers want to see every possible option before purchasing. RenderThat worked with KPM to build a streamlined digitisation process, preserving and representing their products with high attention to detail and painted fine bone china.

01 – Issue

Every product made by KPM, every cup and plate, has its own characteristics with individual lovely painted stripes. We couldn’t simply rebuild the china from scratch based on measurements and then try to repaint the textures based on photos.

Instead, we needed a solution that retained the original character and allowed for an efficient digitisation workflow. KPM also wanted to reach new target groups matching its unique needs and lifestyles.

02 – Solution

We set up a photogrammetry and laser scanning studio. A centralised database along with role management and assignment took care of further processing. At the same time, interior designers designed ‘living worlds’, to cater to each specified target group.

Once product digitisation and the living worlds had been completed, it was easy to combine the two and quickly create a range of high quality images for multiple uses including websites, catalogues, and Point of Sale.

03 – Impact

The Königliche Porzellan Manufaktur became the first bone china manufacturer to move successfully into the digital age while keeping their 250-year-old tradition. Furthermore, costly photo shootings were reduced and thanks to the established digital product warehouse it’s now possible to react rapidly to market needs and create new content in just hours.
